In June-July were seized over 7 tons of cocaine by cutters Mohawk (3395 kg), Tampa (1363 kg), Venturous (741 kg), Alert (981 kg). The concept plan also includes relocating of all cargo shipping operations from Union Pier. In March 2006, some passenger terminals were transferred (as management) to DP World (Dubai-based corporation). The company "Port Authority of New York and New Jersey" was established in 1921 to manage all facilities and services within the combined NY-NJ harbor area. The company also controls all vehicular and rapid-transit systems connecting New York and New Jersey, several airports, as well as real estate developments. During winter are popular southbound itineraries – to the Caribbean and Bahamas.

Starting December 22, 2017 (through April 2018), HAL Holland America Line (Carnival Corporation brand) scheduled cruises to Cuba roundtrip from Port Everglades on MS Veendam. HAL's 7-, days long Cuban itineraries from Fort Lauderdale also visited other Caribbean ports. HAL's prices started from USD 900 per person (double occupancy inside cabin rates). The 210-passenger ship Pearl Mist became the ever-first to operate roundtrip Fort Lauderdale to Cuba cruises, with 10-day itineraries (January through April 2017).

To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link. Port Charleston SC cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Charleston SC, South Carolina. In 2022 were allocated US$550 million for building a new cargo yard (Navy Base Intermodal Facility) and developing the facility's inner-harbor barge operations. It looks like Charlestonians want the cruises, but don't want the new terminal to be located on the edge of the city's historic district. Among their major concerns are the air quality and traffic congestion.

Carrying together over 16,000 passengers, the three liners joined up to celebrate the USA-homeporting of Harmony of the Seas (newest Oasis ship) in Fort Lauderdale. Of the three ships, Harmony was the newest but also the biggest - even though by only 1 ft (30 cm) and 1700 tons. Harmony OTS was finishing her inaugural Transatlantic repositioning crossing. Port New York has two cruise ports with their own passenger terminal facilities. Port Manhattan (4 berths on 2 piers - numbers 88 and 90) is located on Manhattan Island's western coast, beside the Hudson River.

On average, each cruise vessel generates approx USD 2,2 million in revenue for local businesses. Annually, the port handles 4000+ vessels (passenger, bulk cargo, container ships), cargo tonnage 25,3+ million tons, TEU-containers 7,2+ million, passengers 3,86+ million. Port's annual revenue is ~USD 170 million, Net income ~USD 75 million, business activities ~USD 30 billion.

The fat-ferry (catamaran ship) has passenger capacity 650, max speed 38 knots (70 kph / 44 mph) and offers 5 weekly crossings with departures on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The port of Mount Pleasant SC emerged as a Charleston alternative cruise port and will receive its first ship call in May 2017. As Charleston SC self-imposed the 104-vessel limit per year (seasons 2017 and 2018), the Mount Pleasant port emerged as a nearby alternative for smaller-sized and luxury cruise vessels. After anchoring here, they will tender their passengers to Fort Sumter, from where is approx 30-min bus travel to downtown Charleston.

On November 10, 2017, Carnival Corporation completed Cruise Terminal 2's reconstruction and upgrade. Port Everglades's address is "1850 Eller Drive, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33316". Cruise tourists usually arrive via flights to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport but also to MIA-Miami Airport (approx 29 mi / 47 km from Port Everglades). At the top of all the piers, there is a building with dedicated parking lots, snack bars, restrooms, check-in, VIP areas, customs, newsstands. On April 26, 2021, DCL-Disney Cruise Line requested the Port to negotiate for homeporting at "Cruise Terminal 4" and the adjacent "Berth 4" to move its operations from Miami to Port Everglades. In June 2018, NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) installed an advanced sensor system designed for real-time monitoring of tides, water currents, sea levels and other meteo information at Port Everglades.

The cruise port will have to install electric ship-to-shore power to reduce air pollution by docked vessels. For FY2019 (fiscal year) the cruise port handled ~3,892 million tourists (1% increase over FY18). On December 1st, Port Everglades reported a new "One Day World Record" with handled cruise passengers (arriving and departing).

Port Cape Liberty is in close proximity to EWR-Newark Liberty Airport (10 mi / 16 km to the west, ~20-min travel time by car) and easy to access, skipping NYC's heavy traffic and bridges. This is a dual-voltage system targeted for use by Cunard Line and Princess Cruises, which are the terminal’s primary customers. The Terminal's cable positioning device is removable, so it can be stored during winter.

In October 2014, RCCL-Royal Caribbean and NYC Port Authority dedicated a Cape Liberty cruise terminal for the RCI's ship Quantum OTS. In 2010, the NY-NJ Port Authority estimated that improvement to air quality could yield public health benefits of USD 99 million over 15 years. That was a key element for community groups around the terminal’s Red Hook neighborhood to start pushing for shore power.

How to Make your Alaska Cruise Travel Easier: Tips

alaska cruise weather

Choose a May or June sailing for drier weather and fewer mosquitos; summer is the best time to cruise to see abundant marine life and birds. Cruise ships arrive in southeast Alaska in spring, stay the summer and linger only into early fall. The 49th state's snowy, cold and dark winters are not conducive to cruising. To truly enjoy an Alaskan cruise, cruisers can visit from April to October when daylight hours, weather and wildlife are better.

The Best Time to Cruise Alaska: A Month-by-Month Guide

If you worry about seasickness, an Inside Passage trip is the best Alaska cruise itinerary versus a sailing where your ship transits rougher, open waters. Most sail along the Inside Passage, a maritime route along the state's southern coast (and into British Columbia and Washington state) that weaves around the area's thousand islands. Some venture farther north into the Gulf of Alaska; these are often one-way cruises that begin and end at the ports near Anchorage. When you want to go will depend on which activities you want to do, how you feel about cool weather and rain, and the price. Cruises at the beginning (April and May) and end (September and October) of Alaska's cruise season are generally a bit cheaper than those in June, July and August.

Glacier Bay

Temperature is relative, so don’t be shocked if you see an Alaskan sporting shorts and a tank top in June. The 60s can feel downright tropical after winter temperatures in the 20s and 30s. A hat, gloves, and a winter coat would be a good idea to pack for an Alaskan cruise, especially if you depart in April, May, or September. If you purchase a balcony cabin, you can take advantage of the long days in the Land of the Midnight Sun.

Research low-cost things to do in port if you’re on a budget

Alaska’s interior is colder than the coast so the land-based travel season can be shorter than the cruising season. Keep this in mind if you are planning an Alaska small ship cruise and an Alaska land tour combination. Alaskan wildlife and Alaskan residents are preparing for the cold dark winter to come.

Alaska Cruise Weather by Month

Better itinerary – Once cruise ships leave Alaska, it opens up areas for other vessels to cruise. You could visit Glacier Bay National Park or stay longer in port towns. Aurora Borealis – Maybe the biggest appeal of cruising late in the season is the increased chance of seeing the Northern Lights. A bucket list event, some people plan their Alaska cruise for a chance to see the colorful light show. Since most guests avoid the cold weather, cruise lines struggle to fill cruises, especially in the later weeks.

What to Do in Alaska: Top Things to Do in August

So, don’t scratch spring off your calendar just because Alaska’s climate may not be ideal. The peak season to view the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis is between late August and late April, which unfortunately doesn’t overlap much with the Alaskan cruise season. If the Northern Lights experience is high on your Alaska bucket list, consider a September cruise with more dark nighttime hours and increased solar activity. The abbreviated Alaskan cruising season goes from May to September. It has the least rain (less than 7.5 inches in Ketchikan), long days (17 to 18 hours of daylight), and a warm climate. Ketchikan, a popular stop for cruise ships, is one of the rainiest places in North America.

Best Months To Cruise Alaska For Midnight Sun

Prepare for a range of conditions, no matter what month you travel. The city of Skagway, for instance, features authentic boardwalks throughout its main area, and wood is slippery when wet. The southernmost port city, Ketchikan, also features many wooden walkways, and weather is typically wet both here and in Alaska’s capital, Juneau. Late May and early June are the best possible times to view a momma moose and her calves in Alaska. If you do see these majestic creatures hulking around, stay far back (at least 50 feet) and never disturb a lone calf, as mom is somewhere nearby. September weather in Alaska may be unpredictable but with the right preparation you can enjoy all the exciting events.

Advantages of Visiting Alaska in September

Summer workers (typically college students) begin to arrive for the peak tourist season, and shops and restaurants open for the summer. In April, towns along the Inside Passage will have just over 15 and a half hours of sunlight and will be gaining daylight every day. Because of its latitude, Alaska experiences extremes in daylight in the summer and darkness in the winter. The average rainfall in Juneau during the month of April is 2.77 inches. Although the rain isn’t convenient, it is the reason for the lush vegetation you enjoy.

If you’re hunting the northern lights, then include a land trip to Fairbanks, where you can enjoy Denali Park and hopefully catch a glimpse of the aurora borealis. A downside to visiting Alaska in May is that the interior National Parks are still closed, along with many of the land-based attractions and shops that later cruisers will get to enjoy. New small ship cruises, adventure trips, ships & the best deals at your fingertips. About 30,000 eagles call the Great Land home and they’re more abundant in Alaska than anywhere else in the United States.

Many cruise ships begin their summer deployments to Alaska in May before peak season begins in June. Just as Alaska’s weather can be unpredictable in terms of rain and snow, you may also encounter surprisingly warm weather, particularly in the peak summer season. This is another reason why layers are so important—you never know when you’ll need that t-shirt over your winter jacket.

The good news is that no matter which month you choose, your Alaskan cruise will reward you with incredible experiences and memories that last a lifetime. To maximize your chance of witnessing the northern lights, get off the boat and join a land excursion to Fairbanks. The aurora season in Fairbanks lasts from the end of August to April and the lights can be seen four out of five nights if the sky is clear. As August winds down, fall colors explode across the mountains, giving you gorgeous landscapes to explore by ship, train and foot. From the Alaska State Fair in the Mat-Su Valley to the Talkeetna Bluegrass Festival, there is so much to do in this glorious state in August. Blueberries are in season, with berry festivals following, bears roam the hills, and Seward’s Silver Salmon Derby is the perfect place to cast your fishing rod.

For many, the summer months, when the kids are out of school, is the best time to travel due to warmer weather. However, you’ll pay the highest prices for a cruise to Alaska during peak season. The warm weather and long hours of sunlight mean you’ll want to pack sunglasses and sunscreen. You should still wear layers when visiting the port, but if you’re planning active shore excursions like hikes or glacier walks, you’ll want to stick with lightweight clothing. July is the peak season for Alaska cruises and provides the best Alaska cruise weather and wildlife opportunities. This month has some of the warmest weather, longest daylight hours, and the largest number of tourists.

If you are hoping to travel during peak Alaskan cruise season (July and August), you should plan on booking your Alaskan cruise at least one year in advance. The farther in advance you can book your Alaskan cruise, the more options you will have for cruise dates, itineraries, and cabin amenities. Cruising to Alaska in September has many benefits of the peak season (milder weather and good wildlife viewing) with less expensive prices and fewer tourists. You’ve got about a 50/50 chance of getting rained or snowed on during excursions.

Mid-to-late September is one of the best times to spot wildlife in Alaska. Bears will be hunting for the last of the berries and salmon, and caribou, deer and moose will be mating. The beginning of September is much like August, but after the kids go back to school and the family crowd departs, it's shoulder season for cruising and pricing drops.

May brings warmer weather within the cities and towns of the Alaskan inside passage. While it can be freezing cold at times, the weather can also be pleasantly cool. The low temperatures typically range from the mid-thirties to the low forties Fahrenheit, but the highs can get up to the upper fifties. Finding the right Alaska cruise and time to go depends on your preferences.

Nature is in full bloom during cruise season in Alaska, but what you’ll see depends on the time of year and location. Tourist attractions are in full swing, salmon swim upriver and bears (and humans) have access to fishing. Each season has its pluses and minuses and the best time to cruise to Alaska depends on what’s important to you. Now that you know what to expect from the weather, peruse Alaska cruise itineraries. When traveling from Vancouver in the Inside Passage of Southeast Alaska, the waters are mostly protected and provide smooth sailing. If ports include Anchorage, Seward, or Whittier, cruise ships must cross the Gulf of Alaska, which has notoriously rougher waters.

Should I Visit Sofia or Belgrade for Vacation? Which is Better? Which is Cheaper? Which is More Expensive?

The most interesting collection is situated in the museum’s backyard. As the name suggests, it features natural history exhibits and organizes educational programs. Inside the museum, you can follow the history of Sofia through 7,000 years. Check the 18th– and 19th-century fashion in clothing and home interiors, and see the stunning Louis XXIV horse-driven carriage. So, put your explorer hat on, and let’s find which museums and galleries are among the best things to do in Sofia.

Where to Stay in Sofia

The National Palace of Culture (NDK) was built in 1981 as a congress center. It still hosts the biggest multifunctional hall in Bulgaria, as well as several smaller ones. However, it’s the interior that will truly captivate you.

Now You Know Which Are the Best Things to Do in Sofia, Bulgaria

The best hidden places in Sofia to see graffiti are across the street from the Serdica excavation site and on Veslets Street. The murals often change, so you’re no longer able to see Lady Sofia from the photo above. The structure has been left unused for decades despite its great architectural value. Luckily, Bulgaria’s capital city did a smart thing turning the architectural masterpiece into a museum. You’ll notice that St. George Rotunda sits below the street level, under layers of history.

Mostar: The Hidden Gem of Europe

You’ll enjoy an epic sail away party from sunny Fort Lauderdale, and visit Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s award-winning private island destination. One of the most exclusive islands in the Caribbean, Perfect Day at CocoCay is rolling out the red carpet for our arrival, so get ready for a wide variety of surprises. You’ll also spend a day on beautiful Grand Cayman, where you will have the opportunity to go on special curated tours. Then, get ready for amazing Bimini, and a one-of-a-kind island-wide party just for us and an epic farewell party, so make sure to pack your dancing shoes. If you’re backpacking Sofia, expect to spend about 60 BGN per day.

These costs include accommodation (assuming double occupancy, so the traveler is sharing the room), food, transportation, and entertainment. While every person is different, these costs are an average of past travelers in each destination. What follows is a categorical breakdown of travel costs for Sofia and Belgrade in more detail.

How to Spend 1 Day in Tirana, Albania

The stomping march of the uniform-clad men can be heard all around the area. This enormous gallery contains artwork from both the National Gallery and the former Museum of Foreign Art. Having opened in 2015, Quadrat 500 is the most recent admission to the National Gallery and contains 1,700 pieces of art. You can receive discounted admission on Thursdays for 2 BGN. The museum also hosts a variety of lectures in both Bulgarian and English throughout the year. Head for a hike to reach the summit and you’ll be treated to incredible panoramic views over Sofia and the surrounding area.

On its territory, you’ll find an extensive network of hiking trails, ski slopes, mountain huts, and high-rising peaks. The highest summit is Cherni Vrah (Black Peak) with its impressive 2,290 m / 7,513 ft. It’s surrounded by mountains from all sides, and the magnificent Vitosha Mountain has been watching over the city for millennia. The construction was made possible with the generous support of the brothers Evlogi Georgiev and Hristo Georgiev, whose magnificent statues grace the central staircase.

I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. Sofia has four distinct seasons, of which summer (June-August) is the busiest. June can be quite rainy, but otherwise, the daily temperature is usually over 30°C (86°F).

Some of the neighbourhoods constructed after 2000 are densely built up and lack green spaces. There are four principal parks – Borisova gradina in the city centre and the Southern, Western and Northern parks. Several smaller parks, among which the Vazrazhdane Park, Zaimov Park, City Garden and the Doctors' Garden, are located in central Sofia. Vitosha mountain is a popular hiking destination due to its proximity and ease of access via car and public transport. Two functioning cable cars provide year long access from the outskirts of the city. The mountain offers favourable skiing conditions during the winter.

The city eventually fell to the Byzantine Empire in 1018, following the Byzantine conquest of Bulgaria. While the 1818 and 1858 earthquakes were intense and destructive, the 2012 Pernik earthquake occurred west of Sofia with a moment magnitude of 5.6 and a much lower Mercalli intensity of VI (Strong). The 2014 Aegean Sea earthquake was also noticed in the city. Make copies of your personal documents, including your passport and ID. Forward your itinerary along to loved ones so they’ll know where you are. When it comes to scams, if a stranger stops to talk to you out of the blue, be aware that they may be working in a team to try and grab your wallet.

Stalinist Gothic public buildings emerged in the centre, notably the spacious government complex around The Largo, Vasil Levski Stadium, the Cyril and Methodius National Library and others. As the city grew outwards, the then-new neighbourhoods were dominated by many concrete tower blocks, prefabricated panel apartment buildings and examples of Brutalist architecture. In Sofia there are 607,473 dwellings and 101,696 buildings. According to modern records, 39,551 dwellings were constructed until 1949, 119,943 between 1950 and 1969, 287,191 between 1970 and 1989, 57,916 in the 90s and 102,623 between 2000 and 2011. Until 1949, 13,114 buildings were constructed and between 10,000 and 20,000 in each following decade.[114] Sofia's architecture combines a wide range of architectural styles, some of which are aesthetically incompatible.

My favorite spot to catch an open-air live performance in summer is Maimunarnika in the middle of the park. The park around NDK is charmingly decorated with fountains and flower gardens. It’s one of my favorite places in Sofia for strolling around on a nice day, people-watching, having a drink, meeting friends, or watching the skaters. The moment the performance begins, and world-renowned opera and ballet stars grace the stage, you’ll be transported into a world of artistic excellence. The unforgettable experience will surely remain in your memory for a lifetime. Doing your own walking tour and checking them out is one of the best free things to do in Sofia.

The rotunda and the ruins are surrounded by modern government buildings and preserved in a large courtyard that remains open to the public. The small church holds weekday services so just dress respectfully. We think it's definitely worth spending a day or two, so that you can experience the great dining and nightlife, as well as witness the stunning St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Located in the same region as Seven Rila Lakes is one of the most beautiful monasteries in Bulgaria. Rila Monastery is located 117 km south of the city of Sofia, and is the perfect day trip from the capital. This is definitely something you'll want to do as a tour, which can also be combined with Boyana Church.

In fact, Sofia impressed me so much that I ended up staying a few extra days! It’s a perfect budget-travel destination that sees a fraction of the tourists you’ll find in Western Europe. Sofia is the stylish capital city of Bulgaria, nestled beneath the towering peak of Mount Vitosha. While the mountain is the first thing you’ll notice when you arrive, Sofia has so much more to offer than just the view. The city boasts a rich history, friendly people, cheap drinks, and delicious food.

An agricultural zone characterized by fruit and vegetable growing and by dairy farming surrounds Sofia, and it is connected with neighbouring towns by roads. Sofia is also the centre of Bulgarian air and rail traffic. Local transport is served by tramways, trolleybuses, and buses, while several cable lifts ascend the neighbouring Vitosha Mountains. The prices are very reasonable and the quality of the goods is decent.
